Sailing to Weymouth and Portland for 2012

We expect to welcome many more visitors to the area in their own yachts in 2012. Non-competitors will be permitted to sail in local waters but certain restrictions will be applied to ensure the racing can take place undisturbed.
As plans for this progress, details will be released on our website.

See www.visitweymouth.co.uk and www.visitportland.co.uk for information on what else Weymouth and Portland has to offer our visitors.

Spirit of the Sea

What is Spirit of the Sea?

Spirit of the Sea is a nine day festival of independently organised and funded maritime related events that sit under the title name 'Spirit Of The Sea'.

The festival is being coordinated by a team of representatives from local business, local government, clubs and organisations who are looking to raise the profile of Weymouth & Portland's maritime-related events under this title name.

The overall objective is to build the 'Spirit of the Sea' brand over the next four years and beyond so that it contributes to a lasting legacy for the Borough from its role as sailing venue for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Weymouth Fire Station

Weymouth is now one of the oldest stations left in Dorset Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) it serves a community of approx 80,000 residents, although that number increases dramatically in the summer months. Weymouth station has two conventional appliances, one crewed 24/7 by Wholetime Duty System (WDS) and the other by Retained Duty System (RDS) on a part-time basis (called in to staff the appliance when required). The aerial appliance is also staffed by RDS staff. The RDS attend the station on a weekly basis to maintain their skills with additional training periods available for those who operate the aerial appliance. There are two further appliances in the form of the Technical Rescue units and they are staffed by WDS staff. The station is also the base for the Princes Trust Volunteers, who hold a few courses throughout the year from the station. There are also several community groups who use the extensive station facilities for various meetings and support groups. If you are interested in using the station facilities for an upcoming event or function, please contact the Station Manager.

Dorset Police Olympic & Paralympics Team

It was essential from the outset that Dorset police establish a base close to the Olympic site to monitor progress and understand the demands of the area. The building is currently occupied by a small Olympic safety and security team. Working in partnership the team comprises officers from Dorset Police, South West Ambulance Service, Dorset Fire & Rescue and the Ministry of Defence. They will be joined by LOCOG and Dorset Maritime and Coast Guard Agency.
